During my bike trip across the country, I met a guy named Roger Knudson whom I ended up riding with for a couple of weeks across Wyoming and Colorado. Roger was recently retired from a career with the Minnesota Department of Corrections where he held various positions regarding prison education. The years before he retired, Roger worked as the school superintendent for Thistledew Camp. Thistledew is a correctional facility for juvenile boys and runs various programs including a year-round, 3-week wilderness program. During our time together, Roger repeatedly talked about Thistledew and how much I would like working there as an instructor.
A few months after my bike trip when I decided I needed to go back to work, I decided to give Roger a call and ask him to put me in touch with Mark Gordon, the director of the wilderness program at Thistledew. After a few conversations, I went to work as a wilderness instructor. Basically, my responsibility was to take 13-17 year old boys out into the woods for three weeks at a time. I worked there for a little over a year and experienced hiking, canoeing, skiing and camping in -30F weather. It was an amazing experience.
