In my opinion, Idaho is the most beautiful state in the country, rivaled only by Vermont. Wherever you are, you’re surrounded by spectacular mountains, rivers, and gorgeous valleys. In Idaho, the TransAmerica Trail follows the route of Lewis and Clark pretty close, so when you’re riding along the pristine Lochsa River over the Bitterroot Mountains, you can’t help but feel like you’ve been transported to another time. Riding a bike through the northwest gives you such a better appreciation for how beautiful nature can be and just how many wack jobs there are in this country. I guess when you’re on a bike you seem pretty harmless and non-threatening. Whatever the reason, it seemed like every weirdo in Idaho wanted to talk to me.

The phrase Big Sky Country has new meaning when you’re on a bicycle. In some spots, it is possible to do a full, 360 degree scan of the horizon, not see a single car or house, and pick a spot somewhere in the distance that will take you four hours to reach. It is a vast and lonely land, but fortunately, I met up with Ralie Deffenbaugh. Ralie was on sabbatical and decided to ride across the country with his family. His 21 year-old daughter and 15 year-old son were riding with him and his wife was following them in the family car. While passing so many bikers on the TransAmerica Trail heading west, it was nice to find someone going my way, and even nicer to have someone to camp with and talk to at the dinner table.
